There are currently more than 700 DS games—more than Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 combined. That’s a lot of games. With so many, though, some of the better ones are sure to fall through the cracks. Hence, these are the most underrated, under-appreciated, or otherwise overlooked DS games. You missed ‘em the first time. Don’t let it happen again.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215
If I told you there was a DS game with a novel-esque story and visuals like a-ha’s “Take On Me” music video, would you bite? Of course you would. And that’s exactly what “Hotel Dusk” gives you, as you investigate the mysteries of an old Los Angeles hotel in this point-and-click adventure. The game plays slower than most, given the amount of reading involved, but the mystifying puzzles and excellent dialog easily make it a worthwhile experience.
Drawn to Life
If you hate creativity, this game is not for you. But if the idea of drawing playable characters and level objects that “come to life” in your own game appeals to you, then “Drawn to Life” will not disappoint. You’ll first create your own superhero (or copyright-infringe on one of your favorites), and then get down to some serious jumping and coin-collecting. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated “Drawn to Life” for an Outstanding Achievement in Story Development award, alongside such luminaries as “Bioshock” and “Mass Effect.” Believe it.
Dementium: The Ward
Not for the faint of heart, this “Mature” -rated first-person shooter game is very easy on the eyes. It’s also scary as hell. While switching between a flashlight and firearms, players will wander a derelict hospital to unravel the mystery behind grotesque surgical experiments, which, of course, end up attacking you. It’s eerie. It’s moody. And it’s one of the best DS games you’ve never played.
Worms: Open Warfare 2
Nobody likes worms. They’re slimy and hardly worth your time. Unless, of course, you’re playing with the ones in “Worms: Open Warfare 2,” a riotous sequel to the old “Worms” game for PC. It may not sound like much, but you’ll spend hour after hour attempting to take out opposing teams with heavy-duty artillery. You can even take the action online against players from around the world and keep track of your reign on leader boards.
Kirby: Canvas Curse
By looks alone, it’s hard to want to play a game that stars a pink marshmallow. As an adult gamer, I also understand how juvenile it feels to say, “I would like to buy a copy of ‘Kirby: Canvas Curse,’ please.” But don’t let the sickly-sweet design fool you. “Kirby: Canvas Curse” is the most innovative touch-controlled game ever made. It flew under the radar when it was released in the summer of 2005, but you simply have to experience the powerful stylus controls for yourself to believe it.
