A Mehsud aide reportedly confirmed that he had died when a drone attacked the house where he was staying. Baitullah-Mehsud1Pakistan has information that the country’s most-wanted militant, Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud, is dead but official confirmation is still pending, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Friday. [Geo TV Reported]

A suspected US drone attack slammed into a Mehsud family home in the wild, semi-autonomous region of South Waziristan on Wednesday, in which Pakistani officials said his wife was killed and the warlord had been the target. Rehman Malik said Baitullah Mehsud’ wife, brother and seven guards were killed in drone attack in South Waiziristan on Wednesday. He further said initial reports and evidences state that Baitullah Mehsud has also been killed in the attack; however, government is investigating about the reports of Mehsud killings.

If confirmed, the death of the notorious commander would be a coup for both Islamabad and Washington, which has placed a five-million-dollar bounty on his head and branded him “a key Al-Qaeda facilitator” in Pakistan’s tribal belt.

“The good news is that the information is coming from his group,” added Malik, but stressed there was no official confirmation from the administration in Mehsud’s stronghold in Pakistan’s wild semi-autonomous tribal areas.

“I am unable to confirm unless I have solid evidence,” the interior minister said, urging people to wait for official confirmation.

US and Pakistani officials accused Mehsud of masterminding the 2007 assassination of ex-Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, and he has been blamed for the deaths of hundreds of people in terror attacks over two years.

Mehsud has been the target of a manhunt for months but reportedly narrowly escaped previous attacks. Pakistan had also posted a 615,000-dollar reward for information leading to Mehsud’s capture, dead or alive.

Pakistani and US officials told AFP on condition of anonymity that there was information suggesting the Taliban commander had died.

“I was in touch with different people, even from his family and tribe. After speaking to these people I’m now sure he’s dead,” one senior Pakistani intelligence official told AFP on condition of anonymity on Friday.

“We believe that he may have died, but there is no evidence yet. The only evidence is that his land cruiser was there and it was destroyed,” another intelligence official added.

In Washington, a US official said there was “some reason to believe Mehsud may be dead but it cannot be confirmed at this time for certain.”

Infuriated after the Swat Taliban advanced to within 100 kilometers (60 miles) of Islamabad in early April, the Pakistani military launched an offensive to dislodge militants from three northwest districts. Lets have a short video footage, on the manhunt of Pakistan’s most wanted terrorist.
