Universal mobile phone charger approved

A new mobile phone charger that will work with any handset has been approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations body.

Industry body the GSMA (GSM Association) says that 51,000 tonnes of redundant chargers are generated each year. The GSMA said that going to this single standard will not only make life easier for the more than 3 billion mobile phone users in the world today, but it will also help the environment.

Currently most chargers are product or brand specific, so people have to change them whenever they upgrade to a new mobile phone. However, the new energy-efficient chargers will be phone independent and can be kept for much longer. Using the Universal Charging Solution (UCS) will lead to a dramatic reduction in the number of chargers produced, shipped and subsequently discarded as new phone models become available.

On 20 October, the GSMA trade association announced at its 2009 Mobile World Congress that it has brokered a deal with the world’s leading handset makers to come up with a standard for charging cell phones.

All the major handset makers, including, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson, have agreed to use the Micro-USB technology as the common universal charging interface. By 2012, the GSMA promises, most cell phones will use the same kind of connector to charge their batteries. The charger has a micro-USB port at the connecting end, using similar technology to digital cameras.

Seventeen mobile operators, including Vodafone, Orange, and Telofonic, announced they are committed to implementing the standard for the universal mobile phone charger. The GSMA will urge cell phone manufacturers to develop chargers that consume 50 percent lesser power as compared to today’s chargers. It is not compulsory for manufacturers to adopt the new chargers but the ITU says that some have already signed up to it.
