Justice For Imanae Malik

by Adeel Ayub on December 10, 2009

Imanae Malik is a 3 year old child of Aqeel Malik of Lahore, Pakistan. On November 29, 2009 at 3 am in the morning Imanae, spilt hot water on her wrist. Her parents immediately took her to “Doctors Hospital and Medical Center” in Johar Town, Lahore. They don’t know they are going to lose their child. At Doctor’s Hospital DR. SANDEEP KUMAR was on duty and he gave her three injections containing high doses of anesthesia due to high dosage she (Imanae Malik) died in 3 minutes in her father hands.(Her father wrote the whole story you can read it here)

20091207_e01After this Imanae’s family launches drive against doctors’ negligence. Her Father says a lot of lives can be saved by acting consciously instead of keeping mum. As part of the campaign, the family has started putting up billboards across Lahore portraying a picture of Imanae that reads, “I died because of criminal negligence of the Doctors Hospital.”

The boards were initially put up on three roads in the city – Defense Main Boulevard, Qaddafi Stadium and Shama Chowk – and the family plans to expand the campaign to other places across the city.

The billboards also give addresses of websites dedicated to the awareness campaign and follow-ups of the case. It is for the first time in the country’s history that the family of a victim of alleged medical negligence has publicized the issue through billboards and the Internet, press conferences, emails and text messages.

Aqeel said that: The Managing Director of Doctors Hospital Dr.Faiza might be sounding very innocent but dont take her word for it. Doctors Hospital has been involved in a number of such incidents where they have illegally extorted money from various patients. She and the rest of her team have been involved in these dirty tricks all alo…ng. The pharmacy owner operated in cahoots with the very ‘polite sounding’ DH team! The inquiry committee has recommended that these people be tried under the charge of manslaughter.

[Aqeel Malik's message for her daughter (Imanae Malik) ] I fight all day and I cry all night. “Baba ki janoo” you’re always in my sight. It feels like we’re playing hide n seek. I can’t touch you but I can feel you by my side. And I miss you every moment all day and night. “Baba ki janoo” you’re always in my sight…

He said he was even planning to launch a blog on the website www.imanae.co.uk after hundreds of people contacted him and other family members through emails and other media.

Imanae’s website also has numerous pictures and videos of the child and her family, as well as the incident.

Saving lives: “We cannot bring our daughter back but we can do is that we can save other lives by acting consciously instead of keeping mum over the mayhem we have gone through. Dozens of people who faced similar experiences in the same hospital are among those who are contacting me and we have come up with an idea of starting a forum for such victims,” he said, adding that the forum would start operating soon.

Imanae passed away on November 29 after she was allegedly given around four shots of painkillers and various other medicines for treating her minor hand burns.

An untrained doctor allegedly administered the medicines and the overdose led to the child going into a coma and her subsequent death. The Lahore High Court chief justice has taken suo motu notice of the incident, while the Punjab chief minister has also formed an inquiry committee to probe the circumstances of Imanae’s death.

Because of injustices such events repeatedly happen.
People responsible for such accidents should be hanged on roads by law enforcement agencies.
Although too harsh but results will be fruitful.
No one will ever think of doing same thing again

This is extremely sad indeed. Such a thing is unheard of in the West. If this would have happened criminal proceedings against these doctors, doctors managing this hospital and board of directors would be held immediately. I suggest that these doctors involved including the managers, board of dicrectors of doctors’ hospital, all their names together with details of what has happened be submitted to the General Medical Council Uk, American Board of Medicine, European Consulate of Medicine-remember these doctors hold foreign qualified degrees-they should not be allowed near another patient again-THE GMC will strike them off the medical register as well as the American boards and all their qualifications will be rendered invalid. Please also submit their names to the British Embassy, American Emabssy and European Embassies so that they can never practise medicine in the west again. This needs to be done urgently. Also write to the PMDC in Pakistan to investigate these cases-though i doubt that would help as there is so much corruption in that country.

anonymous December 10, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Remember, people of Pakistan. If in the past you have been mishandled by Doctors in Pakistan or your loved ones have died due to medical negligence in Pakistan at the hands of these doctors-remember if these doctors hold foreign qualified degrees you can write to their respective medical council in that particular country be it the UK-General medical council or US American Board to investigate these doctors. If doctors who had malpractised in Pakistan and are now currently working in the UK or US, you can immediately report these doctors to the disiplinary panel of the GMC in the UK or America to start an investigation. You will be reassured that strict action will be taken-this hold true for patients who have been exploited in any way by foreign qualified doctors.

I am also against to visit doctors for minor things. Now a days they are all dirty professionals they don’t have hearts, sense of responsibility. If i have authority will shoot that bastard who injected her….any way i can only pray for my dear little sweety that Allah will rest her in peace and calm. and give sense and feelings to these so called Doctors. It’s a tragic incident that happened in Lahore our heart goes to Mr. and Mrs. Aqeel. It is one of the most painful incident in our country she was a lovely girl and we all cry for her sad demise. But lets not forget few facts regarding this incident, media by taking this incident is trying to undermine the efforts of all the doctors who work day and night for the benefit of the patients .Not all the doctors do private work despite the fact that they are under paid and over worked it is internationally recommended that a doctor should not work more than 36 hours a week but here in our country they work more than 80 hours. Now let me tell u another horrific fact that private medical colleges produce sub standard doctors and foreign graduates who have very low percentage in Fsc. they are getting sub standard degrees from china, Russia and central Asian countries so was Mr.Sundeep Kumar it is the failure of our system that good doctors do not stay in Pakistan due to poor salary and service structure. There 76 medical colleges in Pakistan and 80 percent of them are in private sector. The average fee of medical college is five to six lacs per annum and these private medical colleges are minting money. These matters should be taken into account. Now what does the legislation says about the negligence. These matters are to be taken by the PMDC or any other competent authority and not the Thana and kachery.
In civilized countries like UK the matter is taken by the independent board called, CORONOR’S court they hold independent inquiries and decide what is the best for patient and doctors.
If harassment of doctors is continued by the police. I bet that no doctor would like to stay in this country. A lot of competent doctors from Pakistan work abroad including professors, consultants and GPs. They are great assets for our country and even doctors in Pakistan are doing great job for the nation this is evident to every Pakistani in these recent events in emergencies throughout the country. The medical students and doctors even donate blood.
We should always keep in mind that there is always an element of human error and judgment would recommend that

1) Every doctor’s degree and registration with PMDC should be checked.
2) No drugs for anesthesia should be available on the pharmacy counter
3) Before giving drugs to any patients should be checked by three staff members
4) All emergencies should be fully equipped with emergencies medicines do deal e cardiac and respiratory arrest
5) Dangerous drugs should have a special packing and labeling
6) All doctors should receive training in trauma (ATLS advance trauma life support) and ACLS (advance cardiac life support) this routine in western countries.
At the end we again pray for almighty ALLAH to give courage and strength to the family to bear this unfourtunate loss of life.

All Pakistani people please read the following guidelines on Good Medical Practise UK:from General Medical Council UK who regulate Doctors’ fitness to practise:
Good Medical Practice: Being honest and trustworthy
56. Probity means being honest and trustworthy, and acting with integrity: this is at the heart of medical professionalism.
57. You must make sure that your conduct at all times justifies your patients’ trust in you and the public’s trust in the profession.
58. You must inform the GMC without delay if, anywhere in the world, you have accepted a caution, been charged with or found guilty of a criminal offence, or if another professional body has made a finding against your registration as a result of fitness to practise procedures.
59. If you are suspended by an organisation from a medical post, or have restrictions placed on your practice you must, without delay, inform any other organisations for which you undertake medical work and any patients you see independently.

it is strongly suggested that these doctors together with their additional foreign qualifications are reported to the American Board for malpractice, their licence is revoked and they are held accountable for their actions-they really need to be prosecuted. If their qualifications are from the UK then the General Medical Council UK needs to be urgently contacted to alert them of these doctors so that their fitness to practice is under review. Further to this, the Home Office both in the UK and US need to be alerted on these doctors. The Government inquiry has revealed the following shocking news that has led to the demise of this little girl:
. There is no doubt as to massive criminal negligence/handling in the above case due to the following reasons:

a) The use of Intra Venus Dormicum 2.5 milligram was not required at all for such small burn.

b) Injection Pavulon is used for induction of Anaesthesia for those patients who are to be put on Ventilators during operations; it was criminal to use it in case of a 3 years kid suffering from simple burn. In fact this drug is used for relaxation of respiratory muscles; hence administration of this drug was not at all justified.

This is totally unacceptable!

All that is seen from this is that ‘with the tainted monies of these people’ (referring to above post) police and political power is easily bought in this corrupt nation! What a Shame!!!!!

Abbas bootwala December 15, 2009 at 2:01 am

As a father of a son and two daughters i can truely understand the special bond a father has with his daughter.I cant imagine how aqeel could ever overcome the greatest loss ever.what you are doing right now is i guess the right thing.Of all the people in this country God choose you as that one person who will raise his voice.God has kept that spark in you brother Imanae’s death is not a waste its like a shaheed whose death was important to start the change in our sleeping society.A much better and purposeful death than all the nut cases who blow them selves up in the name of islam.your beautiful daughter will live forever in the hearts of all the parents of this country. Unfortunately some of the doctors in pakistan have no value of human relationships and humanity. For them a patient who enters their clinic is just a way of making money or for that matter increasing their sales.hopefully now the higher officials will take to task of any malpractise any where in the country. The doctors responsible for her untimely death should and must not be spared without wasteing any time. Any doctor even in the remotest govt hospital in the smallest town of our country should not be allowed to take for granted the responsibility given to him/her as a doctor. They are a disgrace to a noble profession. That i think was the reason for God to take back ‘baba’s beautiful jano’.

Waqas peter December 16, 2009 at 5:04 pm

The Prophet said;

“Look at those who stand at a lower level than you but don’t look at those who stand at a higher level than you, for this would make the favours (conferred upon you by Allah) insignificant (in your eyes).”(Sahih Muslim 42:7070)

Doctors or Killres,

I am really shocked when heard about this flower likw\e girl being killed by a doctrors.

The same happened to us when my young brother Siddiqur Rahman, faced head ingury and we brought him to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar, where so called Neuro sugeon Khalid Jamal inspected him in the night and took him as usual refering him to nurses and para medics who installed an ifusion and went to sleep. All the night the father of one left totally on the mercy of paramedics.

In the miorning teh said doctor came and said that he needs head surgery but it was too late and just after operation he passe away, leavin a young wife and a son.

This was a real killing happened due to a neglegence of Dr. Khalid Jamal.

But God will take revenge from him and we will ask him on the day of judgement.

Mar curse upon him and all other doctors who play with lives and earn money only.
