ESPNCricinfo has announced to award the best performances, in all forms of international cricket: Test, ODI, and Twenty20. The winners will be announced around mid of February.
The ESPNCricinfo Awards have two components: the performance awards, which are composed of performance(s) having any particular significance, and the awards based on hard statistical data, i.e. based on detailed data analyses of performances in 2009.
India and England lead the nominations for the performance awards with nine nominations this year. They are followed by Pakistan with eight, Australia with seven, Sri Lanka and New Zealand with six apiece, West Indies with five, and South Africa with three.
Eight players have received two nominations each: Shahid Afridi (PAK), Umar Gul (PAK), Doug Bollinger (AUS), Kyle Mills (NZ), Andrew Flintoff (ENG), Gautam Gambhir (IND), Tillakaratne Dilshan (SL) and Chris Gayle (WI).
The nominees included eight players who made their debuts in 2009: Doug Bollinger (AUS), Umar Akmal (PAK), Fawad Alam (PAK), Wayne Parnell (SA), David Warner (AUS), Jonathan Trott (ENG), Gavin Tonge (WI), and Roelof van der Merwe (SA).
Among Test batting nominees, Mohammad Yousuf was nominated for his inning against Sri Lanka, in his comeback match after a lapse of more than one and half year. Yousuf scored 112 in this first match of the series at Galle.
Umar Akmal was also nominated for his debut century against New Zealand at Dunedin, in first Test of the series. Umar scored 129 runs in his very first inning of Test cricket.
None of the Pakistanis was nominated for Test bowling performance.
Among ODI batting nominees, Shoaib Malik was nominated for his 128 against arch rivals India, at Centurion in a Champions Trophy match.
ODI bowling nominees also include single Pakistani nomination. Shahid Afridi, nominated for his remarkable performance of 6 for 38 against Australia, at Dubai.
For Twenty20 batting nominations, again, Shahid Afridi made his place for his 51 against South Africa in World Twenty20 Championship semi-final.
Umar Gul was nominated twice for his performance against New Zealand and Australia in Twenty20 bowling nominations category. Gul’s 5 for 6 against New Zealand at The Oval, the best figures in Twenty20, which also made him the first bowler to grab 5 scalps in Twenty20 history and his 4 for 8 against Australia at Dubai made him nominated twice.
