Google as a Network Service Provider

Google Inc., the Internet giant, specialized in Internet search, has started spreading its wings. Google will now provide network services in US.

Google will provide ultra high speed broadband service in the US. It plans to build network on fiber optic, offering a speed upto 1 Gbps, a speed which is 100 times more than most of the broadband service providers are providing right now in the US. The ultra high speed broadband service would initially be available for upto 0.5 million people.

Google’s YouTube data centers are already connected through fiber optic networks. This project is actually and expansion of this existing YouTube fiber optic network. Google want this network to be expanded to the homes instead of just its own data centers, providing much more speed and reliability.

Google said it hopes its fiber network will act as a testbed for new applications, for future Internet.

Google is also working on another significant project of developing faster version of http, to transfer web contents more efficiently and quickly. Their new faster version of http is called SPDY (SPeeDY). This protocol is still an experimental protocol, for faster web. Google’s open source web browser, Google Chrome is based upon this protocol. Their experiment showed that this new and faster version transfers web traffic about 64% faster as compared to the existing http standard.
