How Apple Lost the Next iPhone 4G

Apple’s new iPhone leaked, this news has to be the greatest Apple product leak of all time. No matter that product looks good or bad, what features it has or not. But this is first time when Apple’s product was leaked and every one know before the official announcement by the Apple Inc. Gizmodo have finally spilled the beans on how they actually got hold of Apple’s next-generation iPhone which was lost at a bar in Redwood City, California.

I am not sure of how much of this is truth, but at least this what we ‘have been told so far.

Gray Powell – Apple Software Engineer

The story goes with the guy names Gray Powell who is Apple Software Engineer  working on baseband of the new iPhone went to a bar. He drinks  beer, and while leaving bar (as he leaves the bar in drunken state) he forgets his iPhone on the stool . That iPhone was  picked up by a random stranger who walks in bar and asks around, but nobody claims the iPhone.

Later he starts playing with it for a bit, he thinks it is iPhone 3GS  because the phone was wrapped in an iPhone 3G/3GS like shell to disguise it. But the next day when he wakes up, finds the phone bricked, the OS was said to be remotely wiped via MobileMe service. He then  removes the outer case and finds something new – the next Apple iPhone.

Reportedly, Gizmodo paid the guy around $5000 – $10000 USD to get hold of the device. They do their story, and then contacts the Apple Engineer to return the phone.

Gray Powell: Hello?

John Herrman: Is this Gray?

G: Yeah.

J: Hi, this is John Herrman from Gizmodo.com.

G: Hey!

J: You work at Apple, right?

G: Um, I mean I can’t really talk too much right now.

J: I understand. We have a device, and we think that maybe you misplaced it at a bar, and we would like to give it back.

G: Yeah, I forwarded your email [asking him if it was his iPhone], someone should be contacting you.

J: OK.

G: Can I send this phone number along?

J: [Contact information]

I don’t think Gray Powell has to worry about getting hired other places, he’s probably a damn good engineer. If they were going to fire him, they probably would have fired him already. I personally don’t think Gizmodo has legal stuff to worry about. They weren’t sure who’s phone it was .. and a good faith effort to return it was conducted for a week before they got it. As long as the that ticket number he got from Apple is legit .. I dont think he has anything to worry about. If I found a phone I’ll try to return it for a couple days and if the people I thought owned it don’t act like they want it .. I think I’d pretty much keep it until someone asked for it. Furthermore, there is no industrial trade secret issue because pictures of similar looking phones existed other places such as TUDream postings on twitter taken from Chinese forums.
