EU-funded Training Sessions on Sustainable Production Held

Faculty members from several engineering universities ofPunjab participated in a four-day training session, conducted under EU-funded SCI-Pak project and aimed at promoting sustainable and cleaner production in Pakistan.

The EU-funded SCI-Pak project aims at promoting sustainable and cleaner production inPakistan. Under the project, training was concluded for faculty members of different Pakistani engineering universities. The purpose of the training was to share the concepts and tools of sustainable production, along with case studies from Pakistan, and from across the world, to build on the capacity of the faculty members of Pakistan’s engineering universities so that they can impart such trainings to their students.

The University of the Punjab (Lahore), University of Engineering and Technology (Peshawar),Kinnaird College for Women (Lahore), National Textile University Faisalabad (Faisalabad), andUniversity of Management and Technology (Lahore) participated in the training. The participating universities will now organize similar courses, in form of seminars, at their campuses. The faculty members who attended this training will lead these seminars. The SCI-Pak Project will also arrange field trips and internship opportunities for students who will participate in the seminars.

Earlier, from August 3-6, 2010, a training workshop was conducted by TNO Science and Technology, Eindhoven, Netherlands in Tilburg Netherlands for industrial equipment manufacturers (IEMs) in the textile processing and leather tannery industries of Pakistan.

Training materials, which were developed jointly by the European and local experts, focused on achieving one the main objectives of the project – knowledge transfer and capacity building of IEMs for introducing SP techniques and technologies in the manufacturing sector. The topics included process optimization textile processing, boiler systems, biomass boilers, water treatment systems, condensing economizers, chemical recovery in textile processing and alternate energy systems.

The industrial equipment manufacturers who send their representatives to attend the training session were DDFC Lahore, Aqua Regia Lahore, Haroon Engineering Lahore, Sitara Engineers Faisalabad, Fastech Labs Faisalabad, FBL Group Lahore, Cogen Consult Karachi and Energy and Environment Engineers Lahore.
