Customized UI overlays over mobile operating systems are nothing new, especially when it comes to HTC, which has been doing it with Windows Mobiles for years. However, this time it’s different, as Android is a far more exciting – for lack of a better word – mobile platform than any current iteration of Windows Mobile. Android is poised to appear on many different pieces of mobile hardware this year, but we can also expect many of those Androids to have completely different UIs. It’s somewhat like Linux (linux) – yes, there are many different distros and it can all confuse the end user, but once you get acquainted with the basic idea you can find the version that suits your needs perfectly. Motorola Inc.’s (MOT) flagging wireless business is likely to get a shot of adrenalin before the end of the year with the release of a new handset lineup based on Google Inc. (GOOG) software, according to one brokerage. Motorola shares are getting a boost from Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Tai Liani, who this morning raised his rating on the stock to Buy from Neutral, setting a price target of $9, up from $7. The company is betting that it is. “People familiar with the matter” tell The Wall Street Journal that Verizon (VZ) and T-Mobile USA plan to offer Motorola mobile phone handsets running the OS by the end of the year.

Both devices are said to feature a touchscreen and slide-out keyboard and a “social communications” focus. Which sounds somewhat compelling, though it would probably be more so if the market weren’t already enamored with Palm’s (PALM) Pre, Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 3GS and its $99 brethren, the iPhone 3G. That said, I suppose there’s always a chance that Motorola (MOT), using Android, could turn out a handset that apes those devices and returns the company to the glory days of the RAZR or at least points it in the right direction. igoogle-copyDan Zivkovic and Zhen Wang wrote on Google Mobile Blog that “We like iGoogle because it lets us “snack” on interesting information all day long. We can read a little bit of news here and there, glance at finance portfolios, take a look at the weather forecast, and then do a Google search. It doesn’t require a big commitment of time and energy — it’s simply there for us whenever we need it. This kind of availability is even more important on a phone, where it can take a long time to surf. That’s why iGoogle is so convenient on mobile devices. When you’re waiting in line, you can check iGoogle on your phone for a quick “info snack” — even in areas with mediocre network coverage.

But speed isn’t everything. Many of you have told us that you wanted to use more of your iGoogle gadgets on your phone. You wanted to see your tabs, too. We read your blog comments and forum posts and put your requests at the top of our to-do list.

Today, we’re excited to roll out an improved beta version of iGoogle for the iPhone and Android-powered devices. This new version is faster and easier to use. It supports tabs as well as more of your favorite gadgets, including those built by third-party developers. Note that not all gadgets — like those with Flash — will work in mobile browsers. The Android platform may soon get a sizable shot of retro gaming, if Jrioni’s GP2X emulator project continues to develop. Currently in “pre-alpha” stage, the project basically recreates the GP2X open-source Linux-based handheld on an Android phone like the T-Mobile G1.

Since the GP2X is capable of playing classic titles from the Neo Geo, Sega Genesis, Master System, Game Gear and Commodore 64, among others, that means there’s a huge back-catalog of potential games. In this demo video, Jrioni plays Marvel vs Capcom and Samurai Shodown, among others.

No word on when – or even if – we can see a release of the emulator, but there undoubtedly seems to be demand for it. Another of Jrioni’s projects is streaming video to the G1 via VLC and vnc.
