Microsoft has finally launched its latest operating system, Windows 7, from Microsoft Windows family. The successor of Windows Vista has been launched on 22nd October.
Microsoft hopes that this latest operating system will do well, as compared to the previous one, Windows Vista, which didn’t do well.
Windows 7, formerly codenamed as Blackcomb, which was later renamed to Vienna in early 2006, is being released less than three years after the launch of Windows Vista.

The operating system will be released in six separate editions. The versions PC users are most likely to see on shop shelves are the Home Premium and Professional editions.
Other versions are aimed at users in developing nations and corporate customers. All but the most basic edition of the software will be available in 32 and 64 bit versions.
Those buying a family pack of Windows 7 will be able to install the software on up to three PCs. Its Home Premium edition is available in the markets for US$ 149.99 ( ± PKR 12,500).

Windows 7 includes various improvements, like, having greater support for multi-touch interfaces, handwriting recognition and improvements to its ability to work with multi-core processors. Changes have also been made to the familiar task bar that most users have at the bottom of the screen. Continue reading »

Microsoft’s refined search and decision engine raising a question:

Synopsis about BING:
A New Approach to Internet Search
Based on the customer insight that 66 percent of people are using Internet search more frequently to make complex decisions,* Microsoft identified three design goals to guide the development of Bing: deliver great results; deliver a more organized experience; and simplify tasks and provide insight, leading to faster, more confident decisions. The new service, built to go beyond today’s search experience, includes deep innovation on core search areas including entity extraction and expansion, query intent recognition and document summarization technology as well as a new user experience model that dynamically adapts to the type of query to provide relevant and intuitive decision-making tools.
Great search results. Relevant search results are still a top priority for people, yet Microsoft studies show that only one in four search queries deliver a satisfactory result. Bing helps identify relevant search results through features such as Best Match, where the best answer is surfaced and called out; Deep Links, allowing more insight into what resources a particular site has to offer; and Preview, a hover-over window that expands over a search result caption to provide a better sense of the related site’s relevancy. Bing also includes one-click access to information through Instant Answers, designed to provide the sought-after information within the body of the search results page, minimizing the need for additional clicks.

Ed Bott confirmed this news from the Microsoft Spokes Person that Windows 7 will launched on October 22, 2009. CNET reported this news that Microsoft confirmed on Tuesday that it is planning for Windows 7 to hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs on October 22.
To reach that milestone, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month, Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said in an interview.
“The feedback from the release candidate has been good,” Veghte said.
Microsoft made the near-final release candidate version available last month. Shortly after its release, Microsoft finally confirmed that it was aiming Windows 7 for a holiday 2009 release, something that was widely anticipated, but not confirmed by those in Redmond.
In an interview, Phil McKinney, chief technology officer of Hewlett-Packard’s computer unit, said that he feels good about Microsoft’s launch date.
“We’re locked and loaded for the launch,” McKinney said. “The quality of code is just absolutely stellar.”
The software maker also confirmed, without giving details, that it plans to offer some sort of “technology guarantee” giving those who buy Vista machines close to the Windows 7 launch a free or discounted copy of the new operating system. As with past similar programs, details on pricing will be up to individual computer makers, although Microsoft did say the upgrade program will apply to Vista Home Premium and higher-priced editions (meaning not Windows Vista Basic).

Rivals Google and Microsoft have premiered ‘game changing’ products within hours of each other as they fight for supremacy in online innovation.
Google is uniting instant messaging, e-mail and document collaboration into a new service with the audacious goal of changing how people communicate online.
The service, called Wave, will erode the distinction between the various ways people keep in touch on the Web and eliminate the need to use multiple tools to do so, the company said.
Microsoft had unveiled Bing, its much-anticipated successor to Windows Live Search, just hours earlier.

Microsoft just announced sales of Xbox 360 consoles have passed the 30 million mark globally, up 28 percent over last year, which it claims is the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009. In addition, the Xbox LIVE community has grown to over 20 million users, coming from 26 countries.
And these users spend money, too. In a press release touting the sales numbers, Microsoft claims U.S. consumers alone have spent $14.5 billion across all categories on Xbox 360 at retail, and consumers worldwide have downloaded close to 1 billion pieces of gaming and entertainment content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace to date.
It was recently reported that PlayStation sales plummeted 18 per cent overall during fiscal year 2008, although the numbers appear to be picking up again this year.
