The Apple iPad 3 is a tablet device made by the Apple Corporation. It was announced and released for sale in March 2012. The device runs on the iOS 5.1 operating system which is upgradable to iOS 7.1.

On matters of it hardware, the Apple iPad 3 has the Apple A5X chipset, a dual-core 1 GHz Cortex A9 CPU and a PowerVR SGX543MP4 (quad-core graphics) GPU.

Being the first of Apple’s devices to come with Retina Display, the device sales were bound to be significantly higher  as everyone would want an Apple iPad with high resolution such that the pixels cannot be distinguished by the bare eye.

The device weighs 652 g (1.44 lb) and its dimensions are 241.2 x 185.7 x 9.4 mm (9.50 x 7.31 x 0.37 in) just as the Apple iPad 2. It is however thicker with a depth of 9.4mm. The Apple iPad 3 has a LED-backlit IPS LCD, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours display which is 1536 x 2048 pixels, 9.7 inches (264 ppi pixel density) in size. The display has multi-touch capability and has scratch-resistant glass, oleophobic coating for protection.

The Apple iPad 3 has a VGA front camera that can be used for video conferencing very effectively. Its primary camera situated at the rear works on 5-megapixel (2592 x 1944 pixels), autofocus with geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection capability while its secondary camera has 2-megapixel which can shoot HD video up to 1,080p at 30 frames per second as well as the video stabilization feature.

It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, has the Apple’s 30-pin connector port, a built-in speaker and mic.

However, the fact that the device does not support external memory card but has 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage internal memory and a 1 GB RAM is somewhat discouraging for those who’d like expandable external storage. The device does not have GPRS     or EDGE but supports WIFI connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity and USB v2.0 connectivity.

The Apple iPad 3 has a non-removableLi-Po 11,560 mAh battery. The battery offers stand by up to 720 hours and talk time of up to 10 hours.Worth noting also is that the device has a 4G LTE version.
